How it all began
After many years of being a spectator of drag racing at Santa Pod Raceway in Northants the dream of experiencing the thrill of the race track finally became a reality.
In March 2003 I entered my first ‘Run-What-You-Brung’ public test day at Santa Pod in our Corvette. We attended three of these events during the beginning of 2003. As I became more familier with the starting lights (christmas tree) and keeping my foot planted firmly down on the peddle, I managed to achieve a much improved quarter mile run. My best run being a 13.39 seconds to 103 mph which is not bad in a standard street car. That was it, I had caught the drag racing bug!
In July 2003 we attended the North Weald American car show, which included a drag racing car demonstration. One of those cars in that demonstration was ‘Andy’s Rat’ a 1967 Chevrolet SS Camaro. It was bright hugger orange with white Z28 stripes. We had seen this car before at Santa Pod and it was up for sale! Two weeks later a deal was done and ‘The Rat’ was mine.
Then the hard work began! In order to get the car up to spec and out on the track for our first meeting in such a short time span would take many long hours working weekends and very late nights (it took 10 months to be exact). Unfortunately the Easter meeting came and went and we were still not quite ready.
So my first event would be the ‘FIA Main Event’ at the end of May 2004. In this sport the work never seems to finish and I am truly grateful for all the help and advice we have received.
The biggest thanks go to a very understanding husband who works tirelessly to keep the race car (and all the equipment thats needed to get to and at the track) maintained. I would never be able to race without his dedicated support and committment.
